The Writing
One body of writing about return.
One subject throughout: how contact with an ordinary life is lost — gradually, not through catastrophe — and how it is slowly recovered.
The premise is not that something is wrong with you and must be fixed. It is that a life drifts — and that the way back can be described plainly.
The Reading RoomThe Reading Room needs a passcode. If you don’t have one, the whole of it is described below.
The Whole of It
It begins where most lives actually are: not in crisis, in drift. The slow movement away from the plain facts of a life — the body, the feeling, the person across the table — until the life is mostly lived in the version of it carried in the head. Manual to Self Return is the ground floor of the work, a long, quiet account of that drift and of what coming back asks: noticing, the body, feeling again, the patient dismantling of the self that was built to survive. It says, early, the thing the whole work stands on — there is nothing fundamentally wrong with you. You are returning. That is a different thing.
Psychedelics and the Return Process walks the same ground where it steepens. Some people arrive at this work through altered states; the book is about what those openings can show, and about what they leave unfinished. It is descriptive, not instructive, and it recommends nothing. Its weight falls almost entirely after the experience — on the mornings after, on integration, on the slow part, which it treats as the real part. The experience is not the return. The return is what happens next, in ordinary time.
A third volume is written, and not yet published. It takes up what the first two clear the way for — what becomes possible once the ground is steady — and it will arrive when it is ready. The work loses less from being late than from being rushed.
The Essay
One essay sits alongside the books. On Fragmentation and Return is the clinical reading of the whole — what this condition is, in the language of the literatures that have long described it, and what return would have to mean. Where the books speak from inside the work, the essay stands back. Some readers need to know what a thing is before they can trust it. That is a fair thing to want, not a lack of trust.
The Reading Room
All of it — the two published volumes and the essay — is read here, in full, chapter by chapter. This is the only place the writing lives. The books remain the primary source material; everything else, this page included, is derived from them. If you don’t have a passcode yet, the companion will sit with you without one. Read in any order. The book is patient. It does not need you to finish it.
The Reading RoomRead at the pace of a body, not the pace of a feed. Generous margins. No shouting. Put it down when it asks to be put down.
